5 C. flour
2 Tbl. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 ½ C. sugar
1 C. oil
1 ¼ C. dry red wine

 

 
       
  Mix the dry ingredients.  Make a well and pour in the wine and oil.  Mix well.  Form a handful of the dough into a rope.  Twist into a circle on cookie sheet and make three to four diagonal cuts evenly spaced around the outside, resulting in a star shape.  Brush tops with beaten egg and sprinkle with anise seed (optional) and sugar.  Bake at 350° for 20 to 25 minutes.  Makes about 5 dozen.
